Bloody Empire’s Shadows

I must confess, I hold no pride for my nation’s past. The British Empire committed deeds as dreadful as any extreme dictatorships in history.

I’m certainly no historian, and I won’t pretend to possess knowledge of my ancestors’ actions. All I know is that they committed terrible acts.

Should I offer an apology? I apologize, but does it truly make amends? It seems unlikely.

How can a nation of descendants who benefited from slavery ever make reparations? Perhaps Germany provides a worthy example. Let’s affix plaques to slaver statues, revealing the truth of their actions. Let’s elucidate the origins of town wealth. Educate the coming generations about our dark history, making today’s “woke” ideals the norm.

Let us denounce the fascists, racists, and nationalists for what they are: radicalized individuals, fundamentalists, and a real danger.
