Crackling Answer

What are your family’s top 3 favorite meals?

Let’s crank up the old zen cockney for the answer to this.

The roast is set on the table. The crackling whispers, “Do not wait, for time will burn me.”
The eater asks, “How do you know when the roast is ready?”
The roast replies, “When the gravy flows without hesitation.”

A man holds a spoonful of shepherd’s pie. He gazes at the mashed top and asks, “Is this the truth?”
The pie responds, “Mash it, and you will know. Taste the mint and you will see.”

A sausage sizzles in the pan, its skin tight with promise. The eater says, “What is the purpose of the mash?”
The mash replies, “To soften the hard, to balance the bold. But only if you listen to the onions.”

A fish is dipped in batter and fried. The chips lie beside it, golden and crisp.
A passerby asks, “Why the curry sauce?”
The fish whispers, “Because nothing is complete without a splash of fire.”

The pie is filled with the earth’s bounty, and the mash rises like clouds above it.
The eater asks, “What does the vinegar know?”
The vinegar replies, “Without me, you will only taste the surface.”

The eater consumes without haste, savoring each bite.
The spirit of the food says, “In your hunger, find your stillness. In your fullness, find your hunger.”

The gravy flows, thick and smooth, into the waiting plate.
The eater watches, confused.
The gravy says, “I am not here to be understood. I am here to bind what is separate.”

I know there’s 5 meals there, but this is Britain, our food doesn’t photograph well so we need to find more than three (cuz it all tastes the same). I like it though, best to know my place.
